Troubleshooting

Common MCP errors and how to fix them

Most clients show the server's message when a connection fails. In Claude Code and Gemini CLI, /mcp shows the server's status.

MessageWhat it means and what to do
MCP access needs an active paid plan (403)Your workspace's plan doesn't include MCP. MCP is missing from the dashboard sidebar too. MCP comes with paid plans; the Owner can change the plan under Billing.
Send a MagicWP API token (401)The Authorization header is missing. Check the config: the header is Authorization: Bearer mwp_…, with a space after Bearer.
This API token is not valid (401)The token is mistyped, expired or revoked, or two-factor authentication was turned off on your account. Create a new token.
This API token is not allowed from this address (403)The token has an IP address limit that doesn't include the address your assistant runs from (VPNs and mobile networks change it). Edit or recreate the token under Settings → API tokens.
Too many requests (429)You hit a limit. Wait a minute. If you also see failed sign-ins, fix the token first: 20 failures from one address in 10 minutes lock that address out for the rest of the 10 minutes.
This API token can't do that: it needs the … permissionThe token lacks that permission. Create one with For MCP (full), or tick the permission.
A tool or action is missingSame cause: the assistant only sees tools the token allows. Ask it "which MagicWP workspace am I connected to?" to see the token's permissions.
Not done. … needs confirm set to the site's domainA destructive tool needs the site's domain, typed by you. Give the assistant the domain exactly as the site shows it.
The MagicWP API could not be reached (502)A temporary problem between the MCP server and MagicWP. Try again shortly.
The assistant says a site isn't readyIt is still being built. Ask the assistant to wait for it, or check again in a minute.
A Magic Login link goes to the home pageIt was already used or is more than 5 minutes old. Ask for a new one.
A password reset email fails with could not send the emailThe site can't send email. Set up email for the site (see Email), then try again.

Claude Desktop

  • The server doesn't appear: restart Claude Desktop completely after editing the config, and check that Node.js is installed (npx must work in a terminal).
  • Check the log: Settings → Developer shows the server's status and log.

Still stuck?

Open a ticket under Support in the dashboard, and include the message you see and the client you use. Never include your token.
